The LPhiladelphia Society for the Preservation of Historic Landmarks is offering a unique opportunity for young people (entering grades 4,5,or 6 in Sept.) to learn the history, culture/customs, architecture, interior design, fashion, medicine and building crafts in the historic house museums and grounds of The Powel House and The Physick House in The Society Hill Neighborhood of Philadelphia. Weave yarn, saw a tree trunk with a 2-man buck saw, chisel marble, lay bricks, exchange money, dance a country contra dance, cook tea cakes and taste our countries first bottled soda pop all in the georgean style Powel House, built in 1765, and the Physick House, b.1785 and designed in the federalist style of the new nation. Hike the streets of historic Philadelphia seeking architectural features on the houses and historic buildings. Another hike "Into the Footsteps of Fever" focuses on the events of the deadly Yellow Fever Epidemic of 1793. A visit to The historic Pennsylvania Hospital, America's First built in 1755 and see the surgical amphitheater where surgery took place before there was electric light and before anesthesia. This experience brings 17th & 18th Century living up close for our campers. They will find the lives and ways of Mayor Samuel Powel and Doctor Philip Syng Physick interesting and fun!
