Voted "Best in the Bay," Roughing It Day Camps offers a traditional outdoor experience for children entering pre-K to 12th grade. Located on a lakefront site at the beautiful Lafayette reservoir, we emphasize group activities in an outdoor environment where children build friendships, teamwork, skills and confidence. Activities include instruction in horseback riding, swimming, canoeing, kayaking, boating, fishing, sports, crafts, environment education, outdoor adventure and teambuilding. Special programs for young campers, junior high and leadership training. Extended day programs available.

This is a fabulous introduction to an outdoors camp. It is situated at a beautiful scenic park. The counsellors are enthusiastic and the counsellor/camper ratio is very good. In the past, one of the disadvantages was that they only offered two week camps but this disadvantage has now been removed. Although the bus ride from San Francisco to the East Bay may put some parents off, the children learn songs and other fun stuff while on the bus, e.g. little hand projects. Although it is aimed at preK to 12th grade, my son enjoyed it much more when he was in the first grade than when he was in preK, mostly because he had more stamina when he was older.
